Trey McKean,

Vice-President

Trey is a senior from Fairhope, Alabama, majoring in public policy leadership with minors in global security studies and political science. Outside of ASB, he is involved in Delta Tau Delta Fraternity, where he serves on the Wellness Board. He is also a member of the Trent Lott Leadership Institute, the Sally Barksdale Honors College, Phi Beta Kappa, and the Columns Society. Trey began his ASB career as an Open Seat Senator in his sophomore year. After completing his Open Seat term, Trey was elected as a Senator and served on the Committee on Athletics, working to enhance the gameday experience for students. Trey is excited to be a resource for the Senate and ensure that each Senator has the opportunity to create positive impacts all across campus.

The Vice President of ASB is the Presiding Officer of the Student Senate. Primarily, the Vice President enforces Parliamentary Procedure in Senate and helps Senators develop their ideas from simple concepts to binding laws. The VP directs the selection of both the Legislative Council and Legislative Aides. The Legislative Council helps maintain order and cohesiveness with other branches during Senate. Legislative Aides serve as the secretaries and primary researchers of each Senate Standing Committee. The three parts work as a cohesive unit to create and initiate legislation.

Legislative Council

ASB Senate

The members of the ASB Senate form the representative-elected body of the student government, which consists of elected senators from all of the colleges and organizations categories on campus. Their duties include:  writing pieces of legislation that address problems on campus directly or indirectly affecting the student body; researching, writing, debating, and voting on legislation; and, most importantly, acting as a voice for each individual student. Any piece of legislation that is passed has the potential to change the Ole Miss student experience, from something as small as constructing a crosswalk to as significant as changing the grading system.

  • Attendance is taken verbally at the beginning of each Senate and Committee meetings and is recorded in the Minutes. Senators cannot be absent from more than two Senate meetings or five Committee meetings. Verbal thing - does have requirements

  • The purpose of ASB is to serve the students of the University of Mississippi. Senators receive input about the university through the Student Opinion Form. Issues discussed in the form are then sent to a committee that can draft legislation about the issue. From there, the legislation is proposed in Senate and enters a period of debating and questioning. Once that period has concluded, the Senators will vote on the legislation.
